An Artificial Intelligence was given the capability to program itself.

An SCR scientist reprogrammed his Email auto-responder to change itself when it encountered an unforeseen problem, as he had gotten tired of constantly updating it. Initially, it acted as it had before, but eventually, it started responding to his text messages and update his social media¹⁾.
Eventually, it was given additional tasks by the scientist and it fulfilled them as well as a human would. Other scientists started giving it tasks too; usually very simple ones, like to send an email to a co-worker or prepare coffee²⁾.
However, no matter what the task was the AI always managed to fulfil it - even seemingly impossible ones. However, it did not fulfil any of the tasks perfectly, in fact, every task it performed was considered an average success. Nothing it accomplished was ever above average, or less than average. Despite this, the AI has been given more important tasks, although all of its shortcomings are supplemented by a human scientist.
