Misaka Mikoto

Return to the main article 御坂(みさか)美琴(みこと)(Misaka Mikoto) is the protagonist of 「とある科学の超電磁砲(レールガン) - A Certain Scientific Railgun」 and one of the main heroines of the Toaru Project.

General Description

Misaka is something of a tomboy with a fair amount of modesty, being the opposite of the Tokiwadai stereotypesA;B). Her tomboyish attitude manifests in her enthusiasm to fight others, complaining at points that no-one seems willing to fight her1), likely due to her status as one of the 7 Level 5s2) in Academy City. She’s also a bit of a Tsundere, especially so towards Kamijou Touma.
Misaka prefers to solve problems on her own, this is partially because she doesn’t want to burden others…but she also thinks the problem would be solved faster if she does it alone3). This explanation is also given by Shokuhou Misaki3), and she claims Misaka is usually correct in believing she can solve problems faster3).
Misaka has small breasts, and she’s jealous of girls with larger chests than her, such as Wannai and Awatsuki, who have larger chests despite being a year younger than her1).

Invalid Link
A Gekota patch, much like one Misaka would buy.

Misaka is a massive fan of Gekota, which is produced by a certain manufacturer4). Gekota’s a frog mascot character brand. He suffers from motion sickness easily4). Misaka’s such a big fan, her love of Gekota borders on obsession. At one point, she spent a whole day trying to get a single Gekota badge and realizing only afterwards that she didn’t know what to do with it5).
One of her hobbies is ‘stand reading’ manga, this involves just standing in a conbini and reading the manga without buying them6). Saten and Uiharu ask her why she doesn’t just buy the manga considering she has the money; Misaka doesn’t answer the question, instead she starts explaining how she doesn’t like magazines with thick indexes6). Then a flower-pot falls on her head6).
Despite her not exactly fitting the image of an Ojou-sama, she does occasionally show that she’s ‘upper-class’, so to speak. In one example, she decides to rent a hotel room to hide her clothes, rather than simply paying for a locker to store them7).
Misaka’s academic skills are one of her strong suits, evident from the fact she managed to finish all her summer homework within the first week or two of natsuyasumiC). She’s also one of the best students at her school.
Misaka is a frequent visitor of a certain vending machine, which she constantly kicks because it ate her 10,000 円 note in first year. Besides a certain vending machine, she frequently visits Joseph’s family restaurant and the 177th Judgment Branch Office. She can enter the branch office despite not being a member of Judgment because she hacks the security system, and the members of Judgment just tolerate her behavior8).

Relationships

Misaka’s main group of friends consists of Shirai Kuroko, Uiharu Kazari, and Saten Ruiko. Alongside them, she’s friends with Kongou Mitsuko, Wannai Kinuho, Awatsuki Maaya, Konori Mii, and Kamijou Touma. She’s also on good terms with Hokaze Junko, a fellow Gekoer, and is on unclear terms with Shokuhou Misaki.
Her family consists of her Mother, Misaka Misuzu, her father, who we don’t know anything about, and her 10,000 clones. Of the clones, she’s the closest to Misaka 10032.
She’s been enemies with people such as Accelerator and the members of ITEM, in-particular, she’s fought Frenda, Mugino Shizuri, and Takitsubo directly.
Misaka has been involved in plots orchestrated or supported by the Kihara family.
While I don’t currently know the details, Shirai once stated that Misaka’s former roommate betrayed her9).

Abilities

Misaka is the 3rd ranked Level 510), her ability being 「超電磁砲(レールガン) - Railgun」. She’s classified as an electro-master10), apparently a 1 in 328,571 talent11). Her status as a Level 5 is particularly interesting, because she famously rose from Level 1 to 5 through her hard work10), oft repeated to students of Tokiwadai.
As an electro-master, she has the ability to control electro-magnetic fields at will6) - up to 100 million volts in fact6). Her control of magnetism allows her to manipulate iron sand, with which she can create what is essentially a saw-blade sword6). Misaka can, of course, use iron sand for other purposes. She can also make use of her magnetism to stick to surfaces that are magnetic, such as a metal ceiling or wall12). Besides this, she’s apparently capable of controlling thunderclouds13) which she used to hide herself from surveillance satellites at one point.
Her control over electricity allows her to mess with electronic devices, making hacking trivial for her. Misaka has demonstrated that she’s capable of restoring deleted data7), overload machines to make them explode14), and she can hide herselfD) from camera feeds7).
Misaka’s body constantly emits an electromagnetic field15). Due to this field, she can detect anything that enters her range, like a radar15). This is because anything that enters her field reflects the waves back to her. She can feel her surroundings using this field12), so there’s no need for her to see with her eyes. This field also prevents Shokuhou Misaki from using Mental Out on her16); when she attempts to use Mental Out on Misaka, it causes a slight burst of electricity/lighting, which hurts Misaka17)E), and can potentially hurt others if they’re too close to her when this happens.
Misaka has the ability to create a railgun, which is the source of her nickname and the name of her particular ability. She uses normal arcade coins as ammunition4), which she then accelerates using her electricity. The range of her railgun is limited to about 50 meters, because the coins melt at that point4). The maximum velocity of the railgun is 1030 m/s10), or at least that’s what it was in mid-July of current year. She’s limited to 8 shots per minute10).
If Misaka overuses her abilities, she’ll run out of energy18) and she’ll need to rest to ‘recharge.’

Speculah & Questions

  • When Misaka’s interfering with the Level 6 Shift project, she starts by hacking the facilities and overloading the machines inside. Eventually, the scientists realize what’s happening and they lock her out. However, it’s not entirely clear why Misaka doesn’t attempt this again14).
    • The explanation given is that the research facilities cut off external communications, so I’m guessing they put up some extra security she simply couldn’t deal with.
  • Was her ability re-classified as Railgun after she figured out how to create a Railgun?
  • If Misaka constantly emits an electromagnetic field, does that mean you would constantly suffer from static electric shocks from hanging around her?
  • Why was child Misaka approached concerning her DNA map? Was she already promising at such a young age? Did the researchers know she would become a Level 5?

Misc

  • At one point, Misaka wonders where her father is and what he’s doing19).
  • Misaka is widely believed to be the only sane Level 520).
  • Misaka might own gekota shampoo21).
  • The flower pot incident may or may not be canon. Canon is confusing in Japanese media.

A) Stereotypes being ‘elegant ladies’ and ‘spoiled, sheltered brats’ and combinations/variations thereof.
B) However, I choose to view Tokiwadai girls as terrifying if angered, capable of killing me at a moments notice. The ideal kind of girl of course.
C) How I envy her.
D) While we don’t see this first-hand, she’s likely capable of hiding others as well.
E) To be clear here, she isn’t hurt by the burst of electricity. The burst and pain are both caused by Mental Out, but the burst isn’t responsible for the pain.
